Ilford Recorder letter (3rd May 2015): Sad passing of kind Harmegh

Cllr Varinder S Bola, Henley Road, Ilford, writes:

I am devastated after learning about the passing away of Harmegh Singh Rattan MBE.

Mr Rattan was a kind-hearted man, and devoted his life to supporting charitable causes in India and the United Kingdom. His an contributions in society were recognised by the Indian government, and by Her Majesty the Queen for services to racial equality in London.

As well as being a founding member of the Redbridge Panjabi Centre on Ley Street, he was a pillar of the community, and was very active in organising classes and social events for seniors.

He was a long-standing member of the Labour Party and received a special award for his tireless work.

I will always remember Mr Rattan for all the encouragement, mentorship and support he provided me when I stood in last year’s council election. Mr Rattan is irreplaceable and will be dearly missed by all.
