Ilford Recorder letter (27/11/2014): Praise for our informed youth
We are grateful to Cllr Elaine Norman, cabinet member for children and young people, for recently facilitating a meeting between the council’s young councillors and the Redbridge Youth Council.
We are pleased to learn how the youth council has been working hard on social issues such as mental illness and community safety.
It was clear that young people in Redbridge are very articulate, informed, opinionated and have an appetite for engaging in democracy. This is a sharp contrast to how long people are often portrayed in the media – uninformed, immature and apathetic.
We look forward to working with the youth council over the next couple of years to ensure our young people are engaged in civic participation and have supportive voices in the town hall and the House of Commons.
We are also delighted that Mike Gapes MP (Ilford South) has sponsored Early Day Motion 494 which calls for the voting age to be reduced to 16. We hope all MPs in Redbridge will join Mike in supporting this Early Day Motion.
